Does bionic reading actually help?

Claims are mixed. Some readers with attention issues find it helpful; studies don't show universal speed improvements. Try it yourself — if it helps, use it.

How many letters get bolded?

Default: first half of each word (rounded up). Configurable — use fewer letters for subtler effect or more for stronger visual anchors.

Does it work with CSS ` ` or Unicode bold?

Both modes. CSS version is accessible and printable; Unicode bold version works in plain-text contexts but has accessibility drawbacks.

Is it suitable for long articles?

Yes — paste an entire article. For books and long-form reading, browser extensions that apply bionic reading on-the-fly are better than one-off conversions.

Fun Facts

Bionic Reading was patented by Swiss typographer Renato Casutt in 2022 — it guides eyes by bolding initial word fragments, creating artificial fixation points.
Speed reading research from Keith Rayner at UMass Amherst showed the average reader fixates on a word for 200-250 milliseconds, and bionic formatting claims to reduce this.
The concept draws from the saccade-fixation model of reading — our eyes don't move smoothly but jump between fixation points 7-9 characters apart on average.
